CALLED TO BUILD THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD
Last year, 2014, it was the Year "Called to build through the Eucharist. This Conference 2015 we will continue to integrate this with, the Year, Called to build through the Word of God.
The Word of God may refer to: the Bible, Logos as 'divine word', and in Christianity, Jesus Christ the Logos, Revelation, Prophecy, and Divine language.
For this Pastoral Charge, I want to focus on the Word of God that refers to Jesus Christ the Logos (Greek: Logos meaning "word"). This is significant in the doctrine of the divinity of Jesus Christ and his position as Son of God in the Trinity and as it is in the Creeds. This idea comes from John's Gospel, were it says, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God" (Jn 1:1)
And that the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
The Church always lives her life through the Word of God that is Jesus Christ. This truth does not simply mean an experience of daily.
meditation of the Word of God, the Bible, but draws one to the centre of the calling of the Church. In different ways the Church constantly experiences the fulfillment of God’s promise: "…the Word became flesh and lived among us…"
Jesus Christ lived this through his earthly life, through the mystery of his holy incarnation, his birth, childhood, baptism, fasting and temptation, ministry in word and deed, miraculous acts of power, preaching of the kingdom, his agony and trial, his cross and passion, his death and burial, his resurrection and ascension and his sending of the Holy Spirit.
Since Pentecost, the Church, continues to spend time filling others with assured hope that Jesus Christ Logos is God's Light and Life, fulfilling God's redemptive plan according to John’s Gospel. As Acts of the Apostles tell us about the Church: "They devoted themselves to the Apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers" (Acts 2:42). By the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Church was born, the foundation based on Jesus.
For Christianity, Jesus Christ is the Light, and the Life, for in Jesus the Church's entire spiritual existence and life is contained. Jesus himself says, the words he speaks, are spirit and life (John 6:63b) Through his flesh and blood, his ultimate sacrifice on the cross, he offers life to all.
The Word that became flesh is an extraordinary gift from God who gives to us unconditional Love “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16). All may find forgiveness of sins through Jesus, the Word of God Incarnate. All can believe in Jesus, and if they obey his words, they will become his disciples and they will know the truth, and the truth will make them free: “If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:32, 36).
Our hearts and minds therefore search for this truth. This is found in Jesus and the freedom that he brings as he reveals to us fullness of grace, love, truth and the redemptive plan that God has for all.
The Church is called to proclaim the mighty acts of God in Jesus Christ and to serve him in the Church and the world.
In the name of Jesus, you are this year, Called to build through the Word of God.
Let us be faithful in worship, in prayer and in the reading of Scriptures.
Let us witness to Jesus’ words and deeds through sharing the good news.
Let us teach through Bible Study and Reflections
Let us share Jesus’ love and compassion through forgiveness, visiting the sick, seeking the lost and welcoming the stranger
Let us help others to share their testimony of God’s goodness
Let us serve others, giving care, counsel and encouragement to those among whom we live and work
Let us pray without ceasing and work with commitment and joy
May God who has given us the Year, Called to build through the Word of God, give us his grace and power to do his will, and bless us abundantly. To God be the glory. Amen
